90MilesNorth is the creation of a frustrated journalist trying to scrape by while anchored to a dying print medium. Andrew Hickey (me…I’m totally going third-person here) has worked for nearly every print publication in Ulster County and did some time working on a website for a enormo-media corporation that shall remain unnamed.

Over the past five years, he realized the following: As print, television and radio struggle to find the proper concoction of flashy new offerings paired with an awkward and user-unfriendly Internet presence, one very important part of the process is being ignored – the advertiser.

Newspapers tuck advertisements into every nook and cranny of each edition with news, graphics, pictures and maps packed around them. Television and radio advertisements are a good time for viewers and listeners to check out other stuff. And, not only are ads treated like second-class members of each medium, business owners pay a small fortune for an advertisement with a limited lifespan, at best.

Sitting in his office in a newsroom a couple years back, probably on deadline and probably ranting silently about the futile efforts of writing news for a paper that very few people see, Andrew had a solution for the problem of useless advertising in obsolete mediums – an advertisement that never expires.

How much would a business owner have to pay to run a decent-sized ad 24 hours a day, seven days a week? That would easily be tens of thousands of dollars a year (and that’s at small market prices) for a newspaper. Now, for television and radio, running a spot all day, every day is impossible and, even if it was, you would have to sell your business to pay the fee.

So, he figured, why not create advertisements (we call ’em “living ads”) that capture the entrepreneurial spirit of the business; the story of the person who owns the business; and shows future patrons exactly what they can expect?

Taking what he learned from the enormo-media corporation that shall remain unnamed, Andrew combined his experience as a videographer with his knack for rooting out hundreds of compelling business features during his time as a journalist. The result? A professionally shot and edited documentary-style advertisement for businesses to own and put on their websites. It’s an opportunity for a business owner to tell the story of how they make a living and why people should spend money with them.

So, bottom line, here’s why this idea is awesome.

Business owners get an ad that is available whenever people want to watch it.

Business owners get this perpetual advertisement for a one-time fee that pales in comparison to the usual suspects (print, TV, radio…even most other Internet ads).

Once the ad is shot (usually a day or two) and edited (about a week), it belongs to the business owner to do with as they please.

And, most importantly, it is a way to effectively utilize the Internet and your website to promote your business.
